NRSB Radon Measurement Technician-Radon Assessment

Radon Measurement Technician is a national program that certifies individuals who have demonstrated advanced knowledge of radon measurement techniques in residential structures. The individual has agreed to abide by local radon mitigation laws as well as the U.S. Radon Mitigation Standards. Individuals with advanced knowledge are Radon Measurement Specialists. People with less knowledge are Radon Measurement Technicians. The program was launched in 1998 and is based on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's program. The Radon Measurement Technician program is run by the National Radon Safety Board. Individuals must take an approved entry level radon measurement course and pass an exam. Typically, NCHH is concerned about programs that do not require experience to be credentialed, require testing that is closely tied to a specific training program. On balance, the program follows the EPA precedent and has sufficient strength and credibility to offset these weaknesses. 

Four cautions:

• Experience is not required to become credentialed. Take special care to identify the person's previous projects and check their references.
• Individuals and not firms are credentialed. Therefore, make sure the individual who is credentialed directly supervises the radon mitigation work.
• This classification is specific for measuring radon in buildings similar to single-family homes. However, it does not preclude the individual's ability to apply these skills to larger buildings.
• Several states require additional licensing or certification for radon measurement.
• The Board does not have public interest representatives on it.

• Documentation: Ask for a copy of the individual’s Radon Measurement Technician’s Certificate. The certificate must have a seven-digit number consisting of the year, the letters ST, and a four digit number (e.g. 9ST00001). It must be renewed every year. So check to make sure it is current.
